Yarnballa Cultural Festival - Commissioned Exhibtion

A major curated exhibition of work by contemporary Indigenous artists of the Port Augusta region, commissioned as part of the inaugural Yarnballa Cultural Festival in October 2008.

This exhibition will showcase the creative, cultural and critical wealth of Port Augusta art practitioners and propose their potential roles in re-defining the landscape of Australian contemporary art and making. It hopes to uncover a unique local creative identity and perhaps even introduce to the nation a new
rising star in contemporary Aboriginal art.

Exhibiting artists will range from emerging to well-seasoned, and works will span a variety of mediums and disciplines, predominantly selected from the series of development workshops taking place throughout 2008.

Raising the profile of Indigenous visual artists and contemporary arts practice in the Port Augusta region towards a positioning within the context of national visual arts commentary, this project will challenge and transcend the often prescribed limitations of local and national public perception of what defines Aboriginal art.
